Tourism Information
Tourism is a year-round season in Tahlequah. Sighting Bald Eagles, going on Loon watches and hiking are popular winter month activities. Fishing and boating on Lake Tenkiller continue all year, as well as fishing on the Illinois River. While the summer is the most popular time to float the Illinois River fall, winter and spring trips afford their own unique beauty and experiences. Lake Tenkiller has the area’s only SCUBA park which attracts divers. Outdoor recreation is year long, and so is indoor recreation. With Northeastern State University drama productions, world class stage shows through the NSU Sequoyah Institute, perusing antiques and collectibles in many of our shops, watching NCAA sports, visiting the Cherokee Heritage Center, touring our Original Historic Townsite District, trying the fare at our restaurants, touring the Murrell Home and Thompson House, or if you’re looking for a weekend getaway at one of our cozy B&Bs, we know you’ll find something to pique your interest.
In addition, there are special events like the Red Fern Festival in April, the Cherokee National Holiday on Labor Day weekend, the Keetoowah Annual Celebration in October, Taste of Tahlequah in November and some very cherished holiday-related activities.
A stroll down Muskogee Avenue in historic downtown Tahlequah will afford the opportunity to visit galleries, eclectic local restaurants, boutiques and antique stores. A shopper can find everything from vintage clothing to fine jewelry and exquisite home furnishing to organic foods to items you’ll find nowhere else but Tahlequah.
